The backdrop to the UWI Museum is a vibrant map by geographer Herman Moll, making a physical statement of our regional mandate; the mandate of the University of the West Indies. The map is eye-catching and is a favourite ‘photo op’ for our visitors. Even little visitors can identify the islands of the Caribbean from their geography lessons – a thought-provoking realization in view of the age of the map; estimated as being from the 1730s. Moll was clearly a highly skilled geographer and cartographer in a time without aerial reconaissance or technological tools.
So we offer a view of our region, still relevant as well as attractive across the centuries; at a time of year with its own long history of relevance and enjoyment.
Seasons Greetings from the UWI Museum. We will be closed December 19 and re-open January 11.
