Harry Belafonte was born March 1, 1927.

In 1996, The University of the West Indies conferred an honorary LLD degree on Belafonte, who
travelled to UWI’s Mona Campus in Kingston, Jamaica to accept the award. The singer, actor and social
activist noted his abiding connection to Jamaica, where he lived with his grandmother for many years as
a youth. He also noted that his own rise had taken place despite a limited formal education. These two
factors made his appreciation of the award all the greater.

We’ve pulled some excerpts from Belafonte’s address at the UWI. Just click here to enjoy.

  1. Oh Dr. Suzanne F-B,
This is absolutely fabulous. Thanks for sharing. I must come back to the museum and spend some more time listening and looking at the videos there.
Congrats for the job you are doing.
